Gedicht van een dankbare inwoner
Holland thanks its liberators
Ede werd bevrijd door onder andere de “Polar Bears” (de 49ste West Riding Infanteriedivisie). Eerder in de oorlog was deze Britse eenheid gestationeerd op IJsland, daar komt de bijnaam vandaan. De divisie had een eigen nieuwsbrief, “The Polar Bear News”. Het bevatte nieuws over de gevechten in Europa en de vorderingen van de geallieerden. Maar op 26 april 1945 begon de nieuwsbrief met iets anders: een gedicht (pdf, 3 MB). Dit was geschreven door een Nederlandse vrouw die gewond in het ziekenhuis lag. Wie deze vrouw was, weten we helaas niet. “We publish it, not because of any particular poetic merit, but because of the sincerity of its sentiments”.

“Small nation of the Lowlands,
We’ve been severely tried.
And yet our minds kept strong and brave,
Though hearts within us cried.
Thank you for having come to us,
From hated tyranny
From cursed villainy
To deliver us at last.
Small nation of the Lowlands,
We’ve been most severely tried.
They took away our sons still young,
And yet our souls kept pure and strong
Though hearts within us sighed.
You left for us your peaceful home,
O’er land and seas did roam.
Thank you for having come to us
For having come at last.
Small nation of the Lowlands,
Atrociously we’ve been tried.
Our fathers and our sons they shot,
Encount’ring the wrath of God.
And yet our hearts kept hopeful, strong,
Though times were heavy, things went wrong.
